SustRem2021:

Empowering Sustainable Land Management for the Future

3 November 2021 - Professional Development
4-5 November 2021 - Virtual Conference

The sustainable remediation of contaminated sites continuously evolves in response to the ever-growing global environmental awareness driven by social pressure and resource scarcity. In the last decade more holistic concepts have been developed that consider sustainable land management and stewardship. In light of this rapid change and evolving challenges this conference will focus on the theme of empowering sustainable land management for the future.

Under the co-ordination of internationally acknowledged organisations such as NICOLE (Network for Industrially Contaminated Land in Europe), The Common Forum on Contaminated Land, CL:AIRE (Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments) and various SuRF (Sustainable Remediation Forum) chapters worldwide (now grouped under the International Sustainable Remediation Alliance, ISRA), the first SustRem Conference was held in Denmark in 2009, followed by further impactful events in Austria in 2012, Italy in 2014, Canada in 2016 and Brazil in 2018. SustRem2020 was due to be held in Cape Town South Africa but was postposed to 2021 as a result of COVID-19. SustRem2021 will be the 6th International Sustainable Remediation conference, and will be held VIRTUALLY for the first time, hosted by the Network for Industrially Contaminated Land in Africa.(NICOLA) .We hope that utilising a virtual platform will create unique opportunities for international collaboration across a number of time zones throughout the day of professional development and two days of conferencing.

SustRem2021 will be an opportunity to bring together experts from across Africa and around the world to broaden the horizons of sustainable remediation and land management. SustRem2021 aims to create collaboration opportunities for Africa’s unique contaminated land challenges, empower sustainable remediation practices and leave a transforming legacy.

SPONSORING TREES FOR ALL

Trees for All is an award-winning programme provided by Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) that sustainably plants trees in shared spaces for a healthier, greener environment. This successful initiative educates communities about the benefits of trees, while offsetting carbon emissions and transforming the surrounding environment. Trees for All plants and monitors fruit and indigenous trees at: schools; hospitals; parks; clinics; aged-homes and anywhere else people will benefit from, and look after, trees. Visibly enhancing environments and quality of life for all South Africans.

As part of the SUTREM2021 Conference NICOLA has sponsored three “Trees for All” events, planting a total of 90 trees.

Each registered delegate will receive a tree planting e-certificate after the conference. This is one way in which we hope the SUSTREM2021 conference will leave a lasting sustainability benefit in our local communities.

These events have taken place at the following locations:

CLIMATE POSITIVE CONFERENCE

Sustrem2021 has been planned as a virtual event. In doing so, there has already been a significant avoidance in carbon emissions as compared to if it was a physical event. However even as a virtual event, there are still carbon emissions incurred. Examples of which include the electricity usage for virtual meetings and attendees.

The emissions incurred during the planning and execution of the conference have been calculated and carbon credits have been purchased to exceed the emissions incurred. In doing so, NICOLA and Sustrem 2021 has supported two deserving carbon reduction projects in South Africa. This will be the first  climate positive event in the history of the series of SUSTREM International Conference and aligns with the core objective of enhancing the overall net benefit and sustainability of the conference.
